The MRCPsych (Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists) is a postgraduate qualification required to become a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCPsych). It is widely recognized internationally and is essential for doctors training in psychiatry in the UK and other countries.
The MRCPsych exam is divided into two parts:
Part A: Focuses on the scientific and theoretical basis of psychiatry.
Two papers (150 marks each, taken on the same day):
Paper 1: Neuroscience, pharmacology, psychology, and ethics.
Paper 2: Clinical psychiatry and other relevant specialties.
Question types: Multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and Extended Matching Items
(EMIs).
Clinical Assessment of Skills and Competencies (CASC): A clinical OSCE-style
exam testing
practical and communication skills across various psychiatric scenarios.
The exams are conducted globally at various approved centers. CASC is
offered at selected
international centers and online. Locations include:
UK: London, Edinburgh, Birmingham.
International: India, Hong Kong, Singapore, UAE, and Malaysia.

Submit proof of eligibility (qualifications, training experience).
Pay the examination fee through the online system.
Applications typically open 4-6 months before the exam date.
Part A: Open to all medical graduates. No specific psychiatric experience is
required.
CASC: Requires at least 30 months of psychiatric training, including
foundation training or
equivalent in your country.
The syllabus covers a wide range of topics, including:
Part A:
Basic sciences: Neuroscience, pharmacology, genetics, psychology, and social
psychiatry.
Clinical topics: Mood disorders, schizophrenia, anxiety, child and
adolescent psychiatry,
substance misuse, and forensic psychiatry.
CASC:
Clinical scenarios: Assessment, diagnosis, communication, and treatment
planning in
psychiatry.
The fees depend on the exam part and location:
Part A (2024): Approximately £545 for UK centers and £460 for international
centers.
CASC (2024): Approximately £1,100-1,200.

Becoming an RCPsych member enhances your career opportunities globally. Work as a consultant psychiatrist in the UK or other countries recognizing MRCPsych.Further specialization in fields like child psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, or neuropsychiatry. Involvement in academia, research, or leadership roles.
Medical graduates with a recognized degree.

Once obtained, MRCPsych does not expire, but maintaining membership with RCPsych may require annual fees and Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Most candidates complete MRCPsych in 3-5 years.
